Digital Transformation in the Healthcare Sector

Healthcare Sector

The digital transformation has deeply impacted a lot of different sectors around the world, and the healthcare sector has revolutionised how services are delivered, managed, and experienced by patients and healthcare providers. The way we interact with health is becoming more agile, safe, and personalized, making our lives easier and opening doors to new opportunities.

My most recent experience

Recently, I experienced an online consultation, I had a strong flu and thanks to technology, I could have an online consultation. My experience was easy and efficient, it was a video call, I did not need to leave my house and I did not risk to spread the virus at the clinic or on public transport. This is a great advantage of telemedicine, which has grown significantly, especially after Covid-19.

Technology

Not only virtual consultations have been improved, but the technology is also reshaping many other areas of modern medicine. I recently read in the news that in January 2025, Dr. Sudhir Srivastava successfully performed two telesurgeries using the SSI Mantra 3 Surgical Robotic System. This Robot System was developed in India, and it combines advanced robotic arms, a vision cart, a 3D high-definition headset and an ergonomic design. It also integrates with AI to improve the surgical precision, safety, and performance. It was the first Robot System in the world to have regulatory approval for telesurgery and tele-proctoring. In one of the surgeries, a very complex procedure known as the Robotic Beating Heart Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass (TECAB), Dr. Srivastava operated on the patient from 286 kilometers away. What caught my attention the most was that Dr. Srivastava controlled the robot in real time, entirely on his own. This system offers a high-definition visualization of internal organs, making it even more precise than traditional human methods, and patients that had the Robot surgery can have a faster recovery, minimal scarring, reduced pain, and shorter hospital stays. Additionally, the SSI Mantra 3 can be applied to other specialties too, including urology, gynecology, cardiothoracic surgery, and pediatrics. This milestone shows how important the digital innovation in healthcare has been, demonstrating how robotics, AI, and high-speed connectivity are not only improving their efficiency but also helping save many lives.

  1. This blog offers a clear and engaging look at how digital transformation is changing healthcare. The mention of AI-powered diagnostics and virtual consultations shows just how far we've come. I found the part about the SSI Mantra 3 telesurgery system especially eye-opening—remote surgery once felt like science fiction. Now, it’s a growing reality. It is actually exciting to see how these innovations are improving both access and quality of care. Looking forward to reading more posts like this!

  2. Latest and updated technologies being used in the Healthcare sector is not a new concept, however, adopting AI-powered tools and Digital Transformation has taken the healthcare sector to a whole new level. Who could have imagined a Robot doing a complex cardiac surgery instructed by the doctor living 285 kms apart. On that note, do we really need physical doctors and medical practitioners?

  3. I can really resonate with your experience in digital transformation in healthcare system here in Finland. I do think it is a very efficient way to go forward especially when the healthcare resource is limited. From strong ID authentication to getting to consult with a doctor online in a very short time, I think the healthcare system is definitely utilizing digital transformation amazingly.

  4. The topic of "remote surgery" is fascinating! At the same time it is very cool and futuristic but also to be honest a bit scary! I think healthcare is one of those fields where we can greatly benefit from digital innovation. Although it is important not to lose the human touch in fields where the people in pain and in distress and need someone to comfort them. You picked a very fun topic to write about and it was a pleasure to read about.

  5. Great blog Tuulikki! I like how you shared your own experience with digital transformation in the healthcare sector; I too recently had a virtual appointment to fill my prescription and was surprised and satisfied how easy it was to do, from the comfort of my own home. The whole process, scheduling the appointment, meeting with the doctor, and then going to my nearest pharmacy to pick up my prescription took probably about an hour at most! Then, your explanation of this new virtual surgery concept that was successfully carried out in India was fascinating. I wasn't aware that digital transformation has already made innovations to this extent in the healthcare sector, and am amazed about this. Your post is very informative and important to the world of digital transformation to know these options are out there.

    Great job,

    -Charlotte

  7. This blog is particularly fascinating to read! The petrifying evolvement of digital transformation in healthcare such as online consultations and even telesurgeries that frighten people like Dr. Srivastava, is quite astonishing. Your personal experience indicates that technology is working wonders in regard to making care accessible and giving control to patients. The story about SSI Mantra 3 system is breathtaking. Accomplishing complex heart surgeries from miles away, using robotic arms, truly makes it seem like we are living in the future. To witness the enhancement (and relief!) in the realm of medical outcomes, alongside the patient experience, due to AI, robotics, connectivity, and further innovation is incredible (and comforting!). Thank you for these insights!
